Samoa gained its independence on January 1, 1962, this was a historic moment, signifying the first Pacific island nation to achieve independence. To distinguish this event from New Year's Day, Samoa annually celebrates its Independence Day on June 1. In 2024, Samoa marked its 62 years of independence. As June 1, 2024 fell on a Saturday this year, the festivities commenced on Sunday, June 2, with a thanksgiving service held at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Apia and June 3 was designated a public holiday to honor this celebration, with a ceremony held at the "Malae O Tiafau", the historical site of the inaugural Independence Day commemoration. The highlight of the event was the raising of the Samoan flag, followed by a procession involving various organizations schools, businesses and government ministries, a cherished tradition during Samoan Independence Day. The celebrations included live performances by the Police marching band, concluding with closing remarks delivered by Honorable Prime Minister and Chair of the Independence Committee, Fiame Naomi Mataafa.
